ABOUT PILATES

Authentic Pilates training is defined by The Pilates Method, the system of exercises created by Joseph Pilates based on his extensive studies in anatomy and training in the martial arts, boxing, fencing, and acrobatics. The exercises and equipment were designed by Pilates to systematically and sequentially strengthen and shape the entire body. The training focuses on developing the “Powerhouse” muscles (abdomen, lower back, buttocks, and inner thighs) and the mind to control all movement.

Authentic Pilates training is for men and women of all ages and backgrounds who want to increase strength and suppleness, improve fitness, move gracefully, and maintain good posture. It promotes physical harmony, provides an energizing workout, and is effective in preventing and healing injuries. Park East Pilates provides this authentic Pilates training.

Apparatus training
Pilates apparatus are spring-based and manually operated, making the body the driving force of movement. Pressing against the tension of the springs stretches, lengthens, and tones the muscles while resisting the pull of tension emphasises control of the body's movement. The inner workings of The Pilates Method are instantly felt as the body encounters this progressive resistance to its movement without applying stress to the joints.

Mat training
Mat training is the essence of The Pilates Method. It is a series of up to 34 floor-exercises designed by Joseph Pilates to strengthen and shape the entire body. Since the exercises are performed without the use of Pilates apparatus, the body itself becomes the fitness tool. This challenging workout can be enhanced with the use of a Magic Circle or small weights.

The Six Principles of The Pilates Method measure a successful workout. In a most advanced state, all principles are applied in unison throughout each workout:

1. Centering
The main focus of The Pilates Method is the center of the body, the Powerhouse. All movement begins and is sustained through this center.

2. Concentration
Centering the mind with the body in action brings the five aspects of the mind into the workout: intelligence, intuition, imagination, will, and memory.

3. Control
When working from the Powerhouse and with full concentration, we are able to maintain control of every movement, not allowing bad habits or gravity to take over.

4. Precision
"The benefits of Pilates depend solely on your performing the exercises exactly according to the instructions" - Joseph Pilates.

5. Breath
All exercises are performed to the rythym of the breath and heartbeat in order to send fresh oxygen to the muscles.

6. Flow
The full workout is a flowing secession of exercises performed with vigorous dynamics.
